Style Icon: Olivia Palermo

Who else to kick off the Style Icon series but Olivia Palermo.  There is a reason that she has been a mainstay on all the best dressed, most stylish lists for years now.  OP has nailed what I think is the key to fantastic everyday style – how to put together a casual outfit which isn’t too try hard but which still makes you feel that you look great.  How many times have you seen somebody who on the face of it is wearing basic pieces – jeans, a top, flats – but somehow seems to have elevated that to another level?

OP embodies what The Refine is all about – a little fine tuning, a tweak here, a subtle change there, to take the everyday to something special.

She is polished, elegant and classic but always with a twist.  Sure she has her pick of designer pieces but she has a knack of nailing the high street, particularly Zara, Topshop and more recently Mango.  So in theory, OP’s style is accessible to us all and I for one want in on that!  Here’s what I’m focussing on to be more OP.

The High / Low

Pair casual and relaxed with dressy and elegant.  Add a tailored blazer to a t-shirt and ripped jeans, a denim shirt to a midi skirt, a jumper to a pencil skirt.

Add a Twist

Take a classic outfit, something which could be pretty mundane and add a twist – great shoes, oversized accents, texture, pattern or a shot of colour, or styling a basic in a different way (see OP and belts!).

Go Tonal

Stick to the same tones for the whole outfit, whether that’s a classic monochrome, a subtle palette or bright colours.

Make a Statement

Add a statement piece – jackets, shoes, accessories and of course, sunglasses – to an otherwise basic outfit to elevate it to the OP level.

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing some research on that. And he actually bought me lunch since I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thank you for lunch! “Feeling passionate about something is like getting a peak at your soul smiling back at you.” by Amanda Medinger.
